some new news

Every year at my girl’s school they have a wonderful fund raiser called The Dessert Extravaganza.  Each family is asked to make a dessert.  One dessert that is cut up for every guest to taste and one to be sold for $20.  There is also class baskets to be auctioned, a silent auction, live auction, and a raffle.  It is a great time, and  the school raises a ton of money.

This year I was sick and not able to go.  But I did make a momma and daughter apron set for the silent auction.  I just found out that it was sold for $50. vintage dessert cookbook included. Very cool!

And… the really great news…. my cookies that I made won 2nd place!!  I called them “katie jean’s chocolate cookie bar biscotti”.  It’s a modified recipe from a Southern Living cookbook.  I’ve made these before for a Christmas cookie exchange when I had to make 6 dozen of them!  The recipe will soon follow :)

apple green

My three have all gone to the same preschool.  Every year they have a neat fundraiser called the Dessert Extravaganza.  Every year I make a doll bed for them to auction off.  The Extravaganza is tomorrow and I wait until almost the last minute to finish it, which is today.

The cradle is painted apple green.  The bed is vintage and all of the bedding is new, Heather Bailey, Amy Butler, Alexander Henry.  I usually make a little paper doll garland to hang on the back of the bed, but this one didn’t have any place to tie it.  So, I was going to make a doll.

Once I figured out that I had no doll making experience, and this was not the time to learn, I sat down in doll defeat.  Just looking at my stacks of fabric that were dumped out of their neat little baskets.  Then I saw these cute little faces from all around the world, and why not a little girl pillow?  So I found the perfect size glass from my kitchen and had the perfect circle template.

I think it turned out super cute.  I ended up putting the paper dolls in a clear envelope and pinned them to the blanket edge.  Wish it luck! And if you would like to make it to the auction the tickets are $20. which allows you to sample an unlimited amount of desserts, and to bid on live and silent auction items.  All to benefit the Community Christian School in my town of Lincoln.

grant thanks

First of all, thank you!  Your response to Grant’s Gift has been so great :)  I was wondering if me mentioning my own miscarriages would be off putting to some of you.  But I remembered that in the midst of those awful years I always found more women who had so many of the same experiences and each was still so different.

Pregnancy is often difficult for so many of us, and of course I always thought it would be smooth sailing.  There were so many tears.  So many years wasted.

Now, I know those weren’t wasted years.  I grew a lot.  My vows of for better and for worse, now I understand those.   I learned a lot of things about life that I did not want to.   When we face hard times, now  I know we can handle it.  Nothing could be worse than what we faced together so early on.

So thank you for helping this special family.

grant’s gift

Grant’s Gift was established in loving memory of Grant Kelton Wheeler. It supplies blankets to hospitals specifically to be used in situations of stillbirth or infant death. The goal of Grant’s Gift is to provide parents with a tangible item to remember their child by. In addition to blanket collection, Grant’s Gift will ultimately become a Web-based resource for parents and families dealing with the loss of a child due to stillbirth.

Grant’s Gift will be accepting donations of blankets through  Feb. 4th, and their goal is to accept 100 receiving blankets by that date.   I will be donating three blankets in memory of my own three babies, that I lost due to miscarriages.

If you would also like to participate, you can send a blanket to me by Feb. 1st, and I will get it to Grant’s Gift for you.  For more info please look at their site, Grant’s Gift.
